Progress in the War Against Conscience Rights

by Nancy Valko, RN

As I wrote in my 2016 blog “Conscientious Objection, Conscience Rights and Workplace Discrimination” :

The tragic cases of Nancy Cruzan and Christine Busalacchi , young Missouri women who were claimed to be in a “persistent vegetative state” and starved and dehydrated to death, outraged those of us in Missouri Nurses for Life and we took action.

Besides educating people about severe brain damage, treatment, cases of recovery and the radical change in medical ethics that could lead to the legalization of euthanasia, we also fought for healthcare providers’ rights against workplace discrimination for refusing to participate in deliberate death decisions. We talked to nurses who were threatened with termination.

Although Missouri had some protections against forcing participating in abortion, there were no statutes we could find where health care providers were protected against being forced to participate in deliberate death decisions. We were also told by some legislators that our chance of success was almost nil.

Nevertheless, we persisted and after years of work and enduring legislators watering down our original proposal to include lethal overdoses and strong penalties, Missouri Revised Statutes, Section 404.872.1 was finally signed into law in 1992. It states:

Refusal to honor health care decision, discrimination prohibited, when.

404.872. No physician, nurse, or other individual who is a health care provider or an employee of a health care facility shall be discharged or otherwise discriminated against in his employment or employment application for refusing to honor a health care decision withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatment if such refusal is based upon the individual’s religious beliefs, or sincerely held moral convictions.

The Right Thing to Do!… The Right Thing to Do!… The Right Thing to Do!

Give meI am so sick of hearing, “It’s the right thing to do!”… that I could spit nails and talk to the wall!  The only problem is I’d have to wait in line, because the wall’s pretty packed right now with wall-talkers.

Where do these people get the idea that all their ideas are so ideal and you are just a bad person for not going along?  You would if you were a good person, you know, because it’s the right thing to do.  Nooooo!  No, it’s not always the right thing to do.  Sometimes it would be the biggest and dumbest thing in the world to do.  Sometimes it is simply dumb, but that’s good enough for not wanting to do it.

Women need YOU to pay for their birth control pills because that is the right thing to do.  How’s that?  Women can get birth control for little or nothing at Planned Parenthood, so somebody else is already paying for them.  It’s probably YOU, but at least you don’t know it or remember that tax dollar going into PP’s greedy little pockets.  But if a woman can’t get some free pills, she can’t wait for sex, until she does?

Sex.  Sex.  Sex.

Sex on television.  Sex in commercials.  Sex down the street and up the street and even in the park.  And we aren’t even in Pleasureville where their hair is all blown back to announce to the world what they have been up to.  Geez has any of the desperate for sex crowd ever heard about reading a book every now and then?

Don’t get me wrong…

Sex can be a good thing.  It brings new life.  You know, those adorable little bundles with the tiny little features and those little cries that wake us throughout the night… and the day… and whenever we just get to sleep.  But for sex to be the center of the universe and attached to all things at all times… well… that’s a little… a little… shall we say — sick?

Sex isn’t everything.  It’s simply a small part of the big picture.  It isn’t meant to be people’s purpose in life, though I’ve met a few people who would differ with me on that thought.  Nevertheless, if someone is going into actual withdrawals, because he or she has to wait a few days to get a refill on the birth control pills because YOU didn’t pay for them to be had from somewhere other than the free or low cost place — that someone ought to be asking self what’s up with that.  How do they figure you are responsible for making their sex possible?  Oh, I know… ’cause… It’s the right thing to do.”

The right thing to do is to get back to thinking normal.   Normal meaning realization that there is a world out there that doesn’t center around each of us, immediate gratification is not an entitlement, nor are we entitled to avoid the consequences for our actions and lying is not supposed to be in a politician’s job description.

Me… me… me… is way out of style, but some elites seem to be clinging to the old attitude and trying to groom the younger generations to support and be apart of their whiny little, “You must do what I want because… It’s the right thing to do.”

I want.  I want.  I want.

Me.  Me.  Me.

Give me.  Give me.  Give me.

Tantrum.  Tantrum.  Tantrum.

Stomp a foot.  Stomp a foot.  Stomp another foot.

Lie.  Lie.  Lie.

I get.  I get.  I get.

You pay.  You pay.  You pay.

Know why?… this person might ask?  “Because it’s the right thing to do.”  And this person will probably be thinking on in that crazy little way of thinking, “… and I want my way at all costs because what I want is all that matters.  And because it is all that matters — It’s the right thing to do!”

Oh, I hate that saying.  Is there a space for me at the wall yet?

Betrayal: The Slants to Buy Obama Votes

I just watched Obama’s ad called, “Dangerous – Obama for America TV Ad” where a woman says, in part, “Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan would get rid of Planned Parenthood funding. And allow employers to deny coverage for cancer screenings and birth control. Both backed proposals to outlaw abortions…even in cases of rape and incest.”

Does she feel no shame?  Or, is it that she is brainwashed to such an extent that she really believes this pile of “slant the truth” to make an untruth and upset the voters?

Let’s throw in cancer.  Rosanne Barr did as well.  She said she hoped people that ate at Chick-fil-A got cancer, after the owner dared… just dared… to say he believed in traditional marriage.  (You know… that law which remains the law in the majority of the states?)   Oh yeah, cancer is a good scare tactic and wishing it on someone is a horrendous thing to do.  But hey… look who is using it to try to sway opinion their way.

On the other hand, so what if there’s a chance Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan would/will succeed in defunding Planned Parenthood on the federal level?  Planned Parenthood has other sources of income.  They just wouldn’t get as much “easy” money that they haven’t truly earned.  Boo hoo.

Contraceptives are available.  No one is trying to take them away.  However, the lib side does appear to be trying to take away freedom of religion per a mandate that isn’t even necessary.

Basic health care?  Lady in the ad, no one is trying to take away basic health care for women.  That is a campaign illusion.  You are an illusion.  Your worry is an illusion.  You have betrayed women… you have betrayed the truth… as you took, and continue to take, part in slants to buy Obama votes.

Is the betrayal worth whatever you were promised?
